The Run for the Roses

The Kentucky Derby was started in 1873 by Meriwether Lewis Clark, the grandson of William Clark, of “Lewis and Clark”fame.

It started as a mile and a half race, but got shortened to a mile and a quarter.

Only 3 fillies have ever won it.

Secretariat set the record in 1973 and it hasn’t been beaten yet.

Over 150,000 people attend it annually.
