Edward Teach “Blackbeard” was born around 1680 and was killed in battle in 1780. He was a pirate that roamed the east coast of North America and the West Indies from 1717 until 1718.
He would put slow burning matches in his beard and hair so he would scare ships into giving up without fighting
He captured the sloop slave ship “La Concorde” and changed it’s name to “Queen Anne’s Revenge”. It had 16 cannons and he added 40 more.
In 1718, Lieutenant Robert Maynard captured and killed Blackbeard’s crew. Maynard said that Blackbeard’s body had 5 gun shots and 20 cutlass slashes on it. Blackbeard was beheaded so a bounty could be collected. his head was hung from the bowsprit of Maynard’s ship.
