Easter Island

  1. It is believed that Easter Island was first inhabited by Polynesians sometime B.C. The Dutch named it Easter Island in 1772. It was annexed by Chili in1888. In 1862, half of the population was taken in the slave trade.
  2. There are around 900 statues called Moai on the island. They were built between the 13th and 16th century.
  3. The statues actually have torsos. They weigh up to 14 tons and can be 32 feet tall.
  4. Each one represents a deceased head of a family.
